I received my Dr. rer. nat. from the University of Regensburg, Germany in 2005. Subsequently I worked as a PostDoc at the University clinics in Regensburg (rheumatology) and joined afterwards (2005-2006) the CALTECH/ NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, US. I returned as a junior group leader to the University of Regensburg (Dept. Microbiology and Archaea Center). In 2014, I accepted an offer from the Medical University of Graz as university professor on “Interactive Microbiome Research”, where I am heading a large research group, acting as speaker for the research field “Microbiome and Infection” and coordinating the extension study program “Medical Research”.

My research focuses on Archaea in the human body and special indoor environments, such as the international space station.
