Dr Jane Macnaughtan

Dr. Jane Macnaughtan is an Honorary Consultant Hepatologist and Senior Lecturer at the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. She undertook her medical training at Cambridge and Oxford universities during which time she was awarded a Wellcome trust scholarship and the university prize for Gastroenterology. Jane undertook her postgraduate training at the Hammersmith, St. Mary’s, Addenbrookes and University College London hospitals before specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology on the North West Thames rotation.
In 2010, Jane undertook a PhD with Professor Rajiv Jalan at University College London evaluating the mechanisms of bacterial translocation and the efficacy of a novel oral endotoxin adsorbant (Yaq-001) in model systems of cirrhosis and non-alcoholic liver disease. This work resulted in a successful EU Horizon 2020 grant award of 6 million Euros to translate this work to clinical trials. Jane also conducted a study of probiotic therapy in a large cohort of compensated cirrhotic patients.
Jane was appointed as honorary consultant Hepatologist and Senior Lecturer in 2016 at the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. She coordinates the translational clinical research programme of Yaq-001 in patients with cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and continues a programme of preclinical studies focused on gut microbiome research.
