Prof Ina Bergheim

Professor Ina Bergheim is a nutrition scientist with a strong background in nutritional medicine. After studying Home Economics & Nutritional Sciences at the Justus-Liebig University, Gießen, Germany, she obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. She pursued her scientific career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Robert-Bosch-Hospital, Stuttgart, Germany, working on the molecular mechanisms underlying in the development of gallstone disease in humans, followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Ever since she has focused her research not only on the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of metabolic diseases and herein especially the development of metabolic liver disease but also on the nutrition-based prevention and therapy of these diseases. In 2008, she was awarded an independent young investigator research group funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany and obtained her state doctorate in `Nutritional Sciences´ in 2010 at the University of Hohenheim, Germany. In 2012 she was appointed as full professor at the Friedrich-Schiller-University, Jena, Germany, where she headed the Institute of Nutritional Sciences from 2014 until 2016. In 2016 she was appointed as full professor at the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Vienna, being in charge of the research field `Molecular Nutritional Sciences´.
